Death Stranding is a game about delivering packages across a broken America, and it is far stranger and more deliberate than that description suggests. Sam Bridges carries cargo between isolated settlements, and the terrain itself is the antagonist for most of the runtime.

Balance, weight distribution and route planning are the actual mechanics. What makes it work is the asynchronous multiplayer - ladders and ropes left by other players appear in your world, so a route someone else solved makes your crossing easier. It is a game about infrastructure, and it commits to that completely.
