The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the game most open-world RPGs have been measured against since. You play Geralt, a professional monster hunter looking for a young woman being pursued by something considerably worse than he is.

What separates it is the writing on the side quests. A contract that starts as pest control turns into a family tragedy; a fetch quest turns out to have been a lie. Very few of them are filler, and that is why the map being enormous is a virtue here rather than a chore.
