Resident Evil 7: Biohazard reset the series by making it small again. You are one man searching a rotting farmhouse in Louisiana for a wife who disappeared three years ago, and for long stretches you have nothing useful to fight back with.

The switch to a first-person view is what makes it land - the Baker family are genuinely frightening at that distance. It is the closest the series has come to its original tone since the first game, and it is considerably more restrained than the entries either side of it.
