Terraria looks like a small 2D sandbox and then quietly turns into one of the deepest crafting games you can buy. You start with a copper axe and a patch of forest, and the world underneath you goes down through caves, jungle, dungeon and eventually a genuinely hostile underworld.

Progress is driven by what you build and what you kill. Bosses drop the materials that unlock the next tier of gear, which lets you survive the next biome, which leads to the next boss. It is a loop that keeps opening up for far longer than the presentation suggests.
